5 Tips For Saving Money On Furniture

Buying furniture can get very expensive if you aren’t careful. For a very long time, people have settled for astronomical furniture prices. It isn’t far fetched to think that you have to spend a few thousand dollars just to furnish a room in your house.

Although furniture is generally expensive, there are several ways to make furniture buying an affordable process. Finding the best deals on furniture does take some research and a little bit of work, but it is worth it to save hundreds of dollars. Here are my 5 tips for saving money on furniture.

1. Search the web.

Your first step when buying most things, including furniture, should be going to the Internet. Websites like Overstock.com and other wholesale websites will offer you a much better price for furniture. In addition, auction and classified sites like CraigsList and eBay are always good for finding “diamonds in the rough” furniture deals. If you have the time and skills to refurbish furniture, you can save yourself a good amount of money by going this route.

2. Stay away from upscale furniture stores.

I try to generally stay away from big name, upscale furniture stores. These stores will have furniture at a premium price…something you don’t want if you are looking to save money. Although it may seem like a logical move to go to a furniture store when looking for furniture, it is one of the most financially unwise decisions.

3. Ask around.

Simply asking friends, family and co-workers about furniture can give you several options and buying opportunities. This is especially true if you know someone who is moving in the near future. If you are in the market for a cheap table or inexpensive barstools, for example, make it a point to ask around. You can even get the word out on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. This is a very easy, inexpensive way to find great deals on furniture.

4. Assemble yourself.

When you buy furniture that isn’t already assembled, you can save a substantial amount of money. Obviously, furniture stores are going to charge you for the work they paid for to construct the furniture. Most furniture assembly is a lot easier that people make it out to be. If you have the time, patience and skill to do this, I would strongly recommend it. Once you assemble a few pieces of furniture, you will get the hang of it and be able to do it second-nature in the future.

5. Be creative.

Creativity goes a long way when it comes to your wallet and your home. You can go to the furniture store and pay $5,000 for furniture that you will find in a thousand other houses. Who wants to do that? Who wants to get in debt just to be like everyone else? Use your creativity to come up with cheap, interesting furniture and décor. You can do everything from recycle old fabrics, bottles and wood to create your own art and lighting effects. Not only can you save yourself a lot of money, but you can also give yourself some artistic exercise.
